Dr Neelya Agalawatta is an adult psychiatrist who completed her medical degree at the University of Newcastle. During her studies, Dr Agalawatta enjoyed placements across the Hunter New England area.
After junior medical training on the Central Coast, Dr Agalawatta commenced specialist training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). During her advanced training, Dr Agalawatta developed an interest in perinatal psychiatry and spent 12 months working at a specialist Mother and Baby Unit in Sydney. In this role, Dr Agalawatta had the opportunity to work with women affected by fertility challenges. She was able to further her expertise in the unique aspects of perinatal psychiatry, including mother-infant attachment and psychiatric medication prescribing during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Upon completion of training, Dr Agalawatta was awarded Fellowship of the RANZCP and a Master of Psychiatry and she is currently appointed as a staff specialist at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital.
Dr Agalawatta also has interests in non-clinical aspects of psychiatry. She is a past member of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry Trainee Advisory Board and a current member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal of New South Wales.
